You claim you have the answers for the world. What’s up now? …Now you know nothing…you have nothing…you are nothing. There’s no salvation, and probably never was. If there was – and I of course speak of a slim chance – then you’ve lost it. If I were God, I would never have given you as much chances as you seem to think you have gotten, but this…this is a pity. Look at yourself. You’re worthless. Ha, you think He doesn’t have enough saints to do His work on this earth? Saints who are actually doing what’s right; acting like they’re supposed to? You have no clue as to where you are. What’s your defense, huh kid? What is it?
Nothing’s said.
Will you not speak? What happened, too ashamed? Or can you not hear me…because I’m sure you can. Speak.
“You’re right.”
Oh am I?
“Yes. You’re right about this one. In the past I didn’t believe you and I came back to Jesus, but this…I’ve just gone too far now.”
Why are you hanging your head? Don’t you believe that what God did before, he can do again? For surely the God He was yesterday is the same as today, and tomorrow, and forevermore. Why don’t you believe in His grace anymore, huh?
“I’ve fallen too far this time. I’m not worthy.”
Pssh, you were never worthy. God didn’t take you back because of you; He did it for Him; out of the kindness of His heart. But don’t you think that His kindness ever runs out? I mean, I was once an angel, you know. The best angel, in fact. I was better looking, stronger, more responsible. I was the shiznick. But what happened when I slipped up once? I got kicked out of heaven, that’s what. Once! Just once. That’s all it took for God to banish me from his presence. But you, my friend, have fallen a bunch of times, and why God chose to forgive you all those times, I don’t know. Maybe He had a special plan for your life; like a special anointing, but it’s gone now. Face it, brother, He doesn’t want you back. You’ll just…stink Him up. He’s expended a lot of energy on you, so just let it be. Besides, it’s much funner to act like the world. Be like one of us. Come on, you’ll love it. I’ll show you the ropes – hold your hand until you get the feel of things. What do you say?
“That does sound awfully tempting, but I don’t know if I’m ready to give up. I can’t give up. God has to have a place in His heart for me. He wouldn’t disown me.”
But who says you were his son in the first place?
“His Word; the pastor; nature.”
Nature?
“Well…yeah. If He’s real, then His Word is real. Nature proves that God is real, so I must be saved.”
Ha ha, if that’s your philosophy, then you’re even more lost than I thought.
“Why?”
Come on, kid, you honestly expect to be persuaded by nature alone. Ha! Have you ever seen this God of yours?
“No, but you have. I rely on His works, but you even said it yourself that you were in heaven and that you’ve seen God.”
Well…yeah…I guess, if you want to put it that way. …Ha, I guess you have a point there. But then again, how can you believe in me?
“I don’t believe in you. I believe that you’re real, but my hope and salvation does not lie in you.”
It doesn’t lie in Jesus either, that’s for sure.
“Father…Father God, I want you back…please. Please come help me figure things out. I’m lost without you, and I need you, Father. Please, come save me from my current lifestyle. I’ve fallen so far from you, but I need you back. If I can just ask for this one thing, even though I’m unclean and have done a lot of detestable things in your sight, I ask for your forgiveness. Life isn’t right without you. I’m lost without you, Father God.”
You honestly think He heard that?
“God, I’m being bombarded by outside voices, but all I want to hear is you.”
You can’t do that, remember? His Word says that only His sheep can hear His voice. Who are you?
“Father, please don’t disown me.”
He can’t disown what He never had.
“I know I’ve made mistake after mistake, but I know that Your grace and mercy are beyond my understanding, and right now, I really don’t know how You can forgive a sinner like me. I’m not right, but I need to get right with you. I’ve been so far from you for so long, and I want to come back home. I feel worse than the prodigal son.”
That’s probably ‘cause you are. Listen here, “son of the Most High,” you’ve said this prayer a thousand times. How much more do you think your “Savior” wants to hear it? He probably doesn’t even want to hear from you anymore. Besides, isn’t there something inside you that pleads for excitement; change? This God thing keeps you in the same cycle. You sin, you ask for forgiveness. You sin, you ask for forgiveness. And the worst part about it is, if you don’t believe you’ve received that forgiveness, then you don’t get it. Just like if you don’t really believe that Jesus is God’s son, then you will not be saved.
“Father, you say that if I have faith the size of a mustard seed, it can move mountains. You can work with that kind of faith, because it’s faith nonetheless. I have faith in you, Father. I have faith in your power to forgive, to cleanse me of my sins. Father, in the name of Jesus --
He’s not listening.
“I pray that you’ll forgive me of my sins --
You’ve fallen too far. Why do you even try?
“As numerous as they are, wash them away by the blood of Christ.”
You know, the offer to live a satisfying and fulfilling life out here in the world is still available to you. I’m always here. You’ll never really know the mood that God’s in. I’m always accepting. I promise.
“Father, fill me once again with your Holy Spirit and enable me, strengthen me, to live for you; as a Christian should. I’m sorry for the way I’ve been living; for the things I got myself involved in. I pray that you’ll help me as my heavenly Father to live for you. You’re all I want; what I need; my satisfaction. Please keep me from turning away from you again.”
…Hey…you hear that? …Quietness. You think he heard you? Don’t fool yourself, kid. He didn’t hear you. He’s probably too high up, or too distracted, or possibly just doesn’t want to hear from you anymore. Ever think of that? You probably think you’re fine, that you’re forgiven, but what is that you hear? …Stillness. You’re stuck listening to air. There is no voice telling you that you’re forgiven. There is no voice calling for His sheep. Looks like you’re lost again, bro. Why don’t you drop the façade and come out into the world where you belong? Come on, don’t be afraid. It’s over…you’ve failed.
No response.
I’ll wait.
“Don’t bother. I’m going to read the Bible.”
Go ahead. I know the whole thing through and through if you have any questions.
Picks up the Bible and begins to read.
“’For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.’”
Why are you looking to the ceiling? Do you think He’s just going to appear? Ha, that’s the craziest thought I’ve thought of in a while. Don’t you think it. If He hasn’t showed up to the starving children in this country or to the rape victim or to the old atheist breathing her last breath on her deathbed, then He sure won’t show Himself to you. Besides, you’re so dirty and He’s so holy that if you were to lay eyes on Him, you wouldn’t live to tell the story.
Continues to read.
“’But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.’ God, I believe this. I believe that you have forgiven me of my sins this very day.”
Ooh, I feel the floor shaking. You really hit the hot spot. …Give me a break. Nothing happened and nothing will, and you know it. Don’t fool yourself. You’ll drive yourself crazy, and that’s not what a caring God wants. He wants the best for you…so He may just want you to stop. Just stop, kid. Do what’s best for you.
“Thank you Jesus for your love. In your name, I rebuke the lying devil, and I place him and his lies in your hands.”
A sense of piece filled the room…and his heart.
