The Power In Your Mouth
By Pastor Mike Osaro

(a) you are snared by the words of your mouth - Prov. 6:2

(b) have you ever commanded the morning - Job 33:12

(c) but the LORD put a word in Balaams mouth and said return to Balak and
thus shall you speak - Num. 23:5

When, on the hill of Beth Horon, during one of his bitterest battles in his career, Joshuas voice echoed: Sun stand still over Gibeon and the moon in the Valley of Aijalon, he was certainly exercising and exploiting, not only the spiritual value and impact, but also the physical power inherent in spoken words backed up by the power of the creator of the universe and superior God of all other gods Jehovah Adonai.

Without doubt, Joshua was aware that there are spiritual forces who act on our words (ones that are valuable before God), thus making sure they accomplish what they are sent to do: you His angels who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding the voice of His word (Psalm 103:20).
Certainly, not all words are valuable before the ear of God to be acted upon by ministering angels to do what they are sent to do -- and that is why the words Goliath decoded in his incantation: the Philistine cursed David by his gods (1Sam.17:43) did not have any destructive effect on David during their battle over words in the valley of Elah. The questions then remains: is the word you speak to yourself and others valuable in Gods ear; is it uplifting, soothing, and comforting or destructive, discouraging and discomforting? Does it tear apart husband and wives, friends, relatives? Doest bring others down, and impoverish them physically and spiritually; Does it separate people from or bring them closest to God; what is your confession when you are facing trials and challenges; which suggestion and utterances of friends, counsellors and colleagues do you apply in making decision of life.

Yes, our mouths are one of the most potent and powerful human weapons which either makes or mars us as reveals in Prov. 18:21: death and life are in the power of tongue You will agree with me judging from the above text that it is in the field of words that lifes critical battles are either won or lost: it was with word Joshua won, it was with words that Jesus defeated Devil in the wilderness, it was with word that David defeated Ahitophel and Goliath: then David said, all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear, for the battle is the LORDS and He will give you into my hand (1Sam. 17:47). The worthy thing of note from the above is that David first defeated Goliath spiritually in the realm of spoken word, before defeating him in the physical by the sling and a stone. Similar feat was to be repeated when Jehoshaphat was roundly clustered for destruction by ferocious enemies Moabites, Ammonites and Meunites. About them, Jehoshaphat spoke: O our God, wont you stop them? We are powerless against this mighty army that is about to attack uswe are looking to you for help (2Chron. 20:12). As a result of the valuable words spoken, Jehoshaphat enemies were not only defeated, he had peace all around him when the surrounding kingdom heard that the LORD himself had fought against the enemies of Israel, fear of God came upon them so Jehoshaphat kingdom was at peace from every side (2Chron. 20:29-30)

Words not only have effect, positive or negative on us, others or things; but also they have the capacity of bringing blessing and curses, prosperity and poverty, life and death as evidenced in James 3:10: out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing.

Right words not only bring godly blessings, peace and harmony, it also helps us resolves conflict that have the capacity of hurting friendship and bringing family or friendly strife.and Abram talked it out with Lots: this arguing between our herdsman has got to stop (Gen. 13:8) With this act of talking it out with Lot, God was moved to visit Abram promising him: I am going to give all to you and your offspring as a permanent possession (Gen. 13:14-15)

Because words come from the tongue which is related to the heart, soul, spirit and body, the tongue becomes the battleground for spiritual target of Satan but those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heartevil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies (Matt. 15:18-19). This tells the reason why we need to work on our hearts by taking in the words of God and not allow Satan to steal them away. Not only can words uplift, or stir anger, it can also create emotional disturbance and comfort and bring sadness, loneliness and separation not only in our relationship with others, but also in our relationship with God. Gen. 3:5. The consequences of Eve response to Satan words brought devastating punishment that is still plaguing us today and for which Jesus died: all your life you will sweat to produce food until your dying day this is the more reason why we must watch who we listen to and what kind advice we take in making decisions of life. The Bible describes the tongue as:
A sharp razor Psalm 52:2
A sword -- Psalm 57:4, 59:7
A poisonous serpent Psalm 140:3
A burning fire -- Prov. 22:4
A burning fire Prov. 16:27
A fire James 3:5

For us to move forward successfully, we must change our confessions and on a daily basis speak positive words not only to ourselves, but also to others around us: and Moses said to his people do not be afraid, stand still and see the salvation of the LORD which He will accomplish for you You do not know what valuable and comforting strength the word you speak brings to yourself and others in trying situations. Yes, boldly declaring words and linking them to power inherent in Gods word brings not only renewing, but also transforming, invigorating and reforming strength one that makes you not only move from nothing to something; from weakness to power; but also from fearfulness to boldness; yes from sideline to frontlines of activities that brings down the favour, glory and blessings of God of heaven and earth on us

No where else was the power of God in the ancient time came down via the power of spoken word than during the turbulent circumstance encountered by three young Hebrew slave boys - Shadrach, Meshach and Abded-Nego. Faced with disturbing circumstances one that is capable of making the boldest of men fearful, they fearlessly declared their word to the dreaded king Nebuchadnezzar: But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up (Dan. 3:18). Their fearless and valuable words spoken in faith and in power not theirs brought the living God into theirs situation and their history not only changed, their stories and their destiny, as well as the manner in which their God was held was also changed. As a result of that, the kings earlier confession which God will be able to save you from my hand change to there is no other God who can deliver like this... all because men spoke words in the authority of Jehovah. This brings us to another sub-topic: who determines or measures the value of our words.

WHO DETERMINES AND MEASURE THE VALUE OF OUR WORD

Who determines the suitability, the reasonability and the valuability of our spoken words? The answer quickly becomes - the Bible, Gods absolute word. Any word that goes contrary to the living word of God the canonical Bible is not valuable, neither is it suitable or reasonable; irrespective of who spoke, speaks or is speaking it. Nor does the length of time it was spoken matter.

Thus talking about the values of our words, connotes words that are in line with the principles and will of the canonical Bible, irrespective whether it is spoken by philosopher, politician, scientist or psychologist. Yes, the value of our words is dependent upon whose name, power and authority it was spoken from: when God raised Jesus from death he was given a power and a name above any other names and that at the mention of Jesus every tongue shall confess and every knee shall bow in heaven, on earth and under earth (Phil. 2:9-11 emphasis added). In measuring the value of words, the question becomes - did the spoken words agree with the Bible in content, in principles and objective. If any word contradicts the biblical principles, it then becomes valueless. When a word becomes valueless, it becomes powerless and by so doing loses its purifying, edifying, enduring, healing and salvation properties and power properties Gods words possess in excessive abundance.

Valuable word however goes beyond what only holy people say. It also incorporate word or words that Jehovah sometimes allows or puts in sorcerers mouth in order to accomplish His (Gods) purpose so as to prove to Satan that He God is in control. This is typified in the book of Number 23:5 - but the LORD put a word in Balaams mouth and said return to Balak and thus shall you speak Thus Balaam was forced to speak blessing instead of a curse following the order of Jehovah while his master the Devil watched helplessly. Balaams example proves two basic biblical facts:

(a) no one can speak and it comes to pass unless God permits (Lam. 3:37)

(b) Sorcerers, witches and occult men and women including the Devil their
master are timelessly subjected to the incomparable and controlling power of
God the almighty, ever-powerful and never-changing LORD of all other lords.
Yes, they (Satan and his agents) may be in operation, speaking against us
and our businesses, but Jehovah is in control as one of my pastor friends
would say.

We do not need to be afraid of evil words people may utter unto the sun, moon, river, effigy, sand, animal, earth and to the four winds. So long they are not in line with Biblical principles, the are powerless and cannot do us any harm.

Because words include speeches and actions - so powerful and destructive; silence is the wisest thing to sometime do, especially when angry or joyful. During this periods, your are prone not to be alert in judgment and thus cannot fully weigh the consequences of your words. Word spoken have the capacity to set in motion series of events that may continue after we are gone as evidenced when the Jews willingly gave Jesus away in a split moment of passion: and the people answered and said, His blood be on us and on our children The curse activated by their mouth seems to be following the Jews even unto this day because they do not believe Christ, the messiah has come. This is a great lesson for us. We must watch what we say especially in desperate situations similar situation that made Lots daughter to be incestuous (Gen. 19:30-38).

WHAT OUR WORDS CAN DO

Do natural world, animate and inanimate creations respond to spoken and demonstrated words; does the possible influence of words depend on the person speaking them; do symbol and signs (cross, effigy and images) have their own effect on people when words are spoken to it? Psalm 148:8 has this to say: lightening and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his biddings . Because we are created in the image of God, and because everything responds to Gods voice of command, certainly they (animate and inanimate objects) can respond to our commands not as the occultist and Satanists however command. Jesus spoke to the fig tree, it died; Joshua spoke to the sun and moon and they stood still, the Bible asked us if we have commanded the morning since the day of our youth (Job 38:12-13).

With words of our mouth, we can change the cirsumstances surrounding us, we can bless and help, we can change our destiny as did Jabez. When words are codified into prayers, it becomes a powerful force in achieving our destiny. and he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first (Gen. 28:17). By words of mouth Abraham change a citys name to the name that suits him and it remained so.. we too can do the same when we act in Jesus name.

Our words can achieve a lot when they posses the following attributes among many others:
1. Is your word accompanied by the truth (Prov. 8:7-8) when you speak, do you because of fear or respect refuse to through the truth over board. Only the truth stands; and Jesus is the truth. Uriah said to David without fear or favor, the ark and Israel and Judah are staying in tentsas surely as you live, I will not do such a thing (1 Sam. 11:11). Never do what is displeasing to God because of authority. Like Uriah, we should stand for Gode. God was happy with Uriah and so was David for Uriah was listed in King Davids roll call of honor.
2. Is your word accompanied by wisdom (Psalm 37:30). When you speak, especially when rebuking, does your word carry wisdom. then Nathan says to David, you are the one (2Sam. 12:7) Nathan rebukes the king in parable before opening up to him.
3. Does your word brings unity or disunity among family and friends (Eccl. 5:6) then Ahitophel said to Absalom, let me pursue David while he is exhausted and weak and panic him, then all people with him shall flee then I will kill him (2Sam. 17:1-2)
4. Does your word guard against perversity so others are not manipulated into sinning (Prov. 4:24). then Haman said to the king there is a certain people scattered abroadtheir laws are differentneither do they keep the kings lawlet it be decreed that they be destroyedand the king said to Haman do with them as it seems good to you (Esth.3:8-11).
5. Does your word gingers or support conspiracy against another. all the president and satraps came together to the kingand agreed that the king establish a royal statutes and make a firm decree that whoever shall make petition of any godbe caste into the den of lion (Dan. 6:6-7). The word you speak on or in behalf of another can make or destroy him. Lets not do such.
6. Does your word sound arrogant (1Sam.2:3) who is that god who can deliver you out of my hands (Dan. 3:15D). But God deliver them and humble Nebuchadnezzar, he was later turned into beast. Same thing happened to whoever thinks he has the power to lord it over another in a way the bible does not support.
7. Does your word put another in danger: Genesis 31:32 records: with whomever thou findest thy gods, let him not live Jacob words put Rachel, his wife who stole her father (Labans) gods in danger. Had God not intervened and the god found with Rachel, she would have been killed. Even when you are absolutely sure about a case, the safest words to speak in any conflict situation should be take it easy we will sort things out.
And Elijah came to all the people, and said, "How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, then follow him." But the people answered him not a word (1Kings 18:21). Speak out and follow God through Jesus. The words we speak create our worlds- positively and negatively. As you live each minute of your lives daily, always speak a word that not only encourages, uplift, comfort, blesses but also ones that lead people to salvation in Jesus Christ. Until some other times, let our conscious though remembers Jesus last word that brought life and hope to us; it is finished; it is finished and it is finished!! God bless you.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for this lesson; I've often heard there is power in the tongue, but this is the most in-depth explanation I've encountered. You've reminded me of the need to replace the negative, internal, soundtrack of my life with God's holy words of life.

Amen!

"Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer."
