In our Sunday morning church service the preacher said " Jesus never asked us to become Christians " but just to follow him. I later emailed him to ask why he would make that statement knowing as it would upset some of the folks listening. His response was that he didn't have a problem with anyone who want to call themselves christians. He was making a point about following Jesus. It caused some folks to leave the church service and I don't know if they will come back. any thoughts on the matter, I'm looking for advice.

I'm really not absolutely sure what the preacher meant by his statement .. especially since I was not there to hear the whole sermon and get the context of his message ... BUT, what comes to my mind is that he may have been trying to make the point that many people call themselves Christians without putting forth the effort to KNOW our Lord and/or LIVE like Christians.
Jesus never asked us to wear a title ... He simply asked us to follow Him - to know Him and be like Him.

Sometimes people are just too clever even for themselves. Of course, Jesus never asked us to be Christians, He also never asked us go to church and listen to preachers tell us how to interpret the Bible, either.
The point your preacher was probably trying to make is that it's our deeds, not our words (or titles as Christians) that win us points with God.
Nevertheless, it would be silly to assume that a person who "follows Christ", that is, who follows His teachings, and imitates His character, when asked what he believes to say, "I'm not a Christian, rather, I follow Christ."
It's the same difference, just a matter of polemics. Perhaps, your preacher was trying to be a little too clever for even himself?
