Repentence

The things i have read in the Bible and other readings are very "general"
about repentence. They say "Father, i have sinned" or Father, i am a
sinner". "I believe that Christ is the Son of God, who was born of woman,
who lived a perfect life, died on the cross for all sinners sins, and was
resurrected on the third day, and now sits at the right hand of God.
I have committed so many sins in my life that i cannot possibly remember
them all nor the people's names i have sinned against.
I have three questions:
1 Must every individual sin be confessed or is "i confess i am a sinner" sufficient?
2 I am confused whether all subsequent sins must also be formally confessed
to Jesus Christ?
3 What if a Christian dies with some unconfessed sins; will he/she go to Hell?
Thank you so much for the answers to my questions!

Good afternoon and thanks so much for your question. What we're really saying to Jesus when we confess our sins is the we need him. We are telling Jesus "I am a sinner, I can't do it without you." This attitude of submission, along with a genuine repentance for all of our sins, is what God is really looking for from us. Listing all your sins, one after another, is not necessary (or even possible - who can remember all their sins?!) but you can certainly confess those major sins that come to mind. I don't think it's necessary to confess every sin subsequent to our conversion (again - some we will forget and others we will not even be aware of), but it's always a good idea to confess our major flaws to the Lord and seek His forgiveness when we've really messed up. This keeps our attitude in check and our hearts in the right place. Finally, Jesus' death on the cross covers all sin for all time for those who trust in Him, so that once we have accepted Him as our savior, all our sins are washed way. We can be certain of going to heaven when we die, even if we sinned moments before our death. I hope this helps, please don't hesitate to ask more or join us in the discussion area if you walk to talk about these issues. God Bless.

I think it is important to confess all the sins that you can think of because I think anything that comes to mind is because God is bringing it to your mind so that you can confess and receive forgiveness for these sins. If you can't remember all of your sins, I would ask God to bring them to mind so that you can get forgiveness. Most of all, if you have asked Jesus into your life and heart, you are forgiven for those sins of the past. When you do sin again, ask God for forgiveness and ask God to help you avoid these types of sin in the future.

I think that if you pray and ask God to be in control of your life and you tell God that you are a sinner--that implies you have sinned--it does not matter how many times you have sinned or even what those sins are--you are forgiven at that moment you ask and the slate has been wiped clean. If you sin again (which everyone will) it is matter of asking God's forgiveness again for that particular sin. The reason for this is so that you have a right relationship with him. Sin interferes with our relationship with God--it can cause us to be blocked in our vision, allow us to wander further from him or cause us to withdraw and not accept his forgiveness because of guilt.
If you find you are sinning in the same area again and again, then it is time to ask God to help you change your behavior as well as asking for forgiveness. If you are sinning and you go to heaven at the same time, if you are a Christian, you are still saved--you will go to heaven. However, I do think that you will have to account for everything you've done on earth that has not been forgiven (i.e. things you have deliberately and willfully done, against God, knowing it was sin and choosing to not ask forgiveness for it). Those sins of the past which you received forgiveness for won't count when you get to heaven. I hope this helps!
