Christian Music, How Should It Sound?

Pentecostal church was the church; I first belonged to when I have known Christ. Due to economic reason I left my country to search for a better job abroad at Middle East. I found one Christian at work and he belonged to a Baptist church. To my excitement of finding a brother in Christ I have started sharing testimonies and life experiences as a Christian, and it was good and encouraging. But the excitement didn't last long until one time. I was singing songs, joyful Christian praise and worship songs, which kind of a lively type and also which I learned to grew up with. The brother told me that, it would be nice if I should be singing hymns and solemn songs for it is biblical rather than loud and noisy songs of praise. He quoted that as Christians we should be bringing the church to the world, not the other way around. Further, he explained that there is a danger of bringing the earthly, aggressive, loud and lively musical sound of the world which lyrics are of some kind replaced by Christian lyrics... for it feeds the emotional sense of the flesh.. and not feeding the spirit.. David danced outside the temple and not inside.
After that I felt so guilty and weary thinking I have been singing these songs of praise for years... what if hes point of view was right?
But I agonize in pain, thinking, for all I know these years passed, I had never sang songs of praise and worship not addressed to God and Jesus. I hope there is someone out there who can explain in a deep sense what does the Psalm 33:1-3 is about.
Hoping for answers... God Bless!

Hi,
The Bible says make a joyful noise unto the Lord. Clap your hands serve him all ye lands. That does not sound solemn to me. David the young boy who killed goliath grew up singing songs of joy and sorrow. If you listen to Jewish music it is happy and joyful sad and solemn. That is the way your friend feels about music and that is his choice. As long as the song is glorifying Jesus and the words are understood the song is not generic meaning it does not say Jesus or mention god then perhaps that music may be questionable. Your praise to Him in song is a sweet sound in His ear. You continue on.
God Bless in your quest to please Him,
Tammy

In as much as our relationship with the Lord is personal, each of us can and should worship Him in a personal manner. I would not let anybody dictate to me concerning MY worship of MY Lord. We are all different people, individuals. I believe that as long as your worship is sincere, it delights God. Whether you sing hymns or if your display is of the radical depends on your personality. The Bible says shout with joy to God. See Psalm 66. How do you "shout" a hymn?
This is similar to people of certain denominations who start their prayers, "Lord, we come beore you as humble as we know how..." When the Word of God clearly states, "come boldly before the throne..."
