How many tribes of Israel were there. I thought there were only 12, but someone recently has informed me otherwise, so I was just wondering.

I was just reading Genesis 49 this morning. When I saw your question I remembered this verse; "All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them." Genesis 49:28
