Why Do Our Works Matter

Hello. Since Christians believe we are saved and will live with God forever if we accept jesus as Our saviour, why does it matter what our works are? Is there a judgment that places us in a hierarchy based on our actions/works or ??
It seems that what we do/what we learn/how we grow emotionally and intellectually and spiritually must matter--or else why worry?
Your input will be greatly appreciated.

You are right in saying that our works do not save us. What saves us is our faith in Jesus as our saviour. Now, because we know He saved us, we ought to love him for it. And, as Jesus said in John 14:15, "If you love me you will obey what I command". We don't obey Him in order to gain salvation, but rather as a logical response to the love that He has shown us. Our obedience to His commands comes naturally from loving Him. If we said that we loved Jesus and then disobeyed His commands, several bad things would happen. First and most importantly, it would be a direct sin against God, which should be avoided at all costs. Second, if we fail to act in obedience to Christ, the people in public who see us will perceive us as being hypocritical, and they will dismiss Christians as a bunch of self-righteous people who are just as bad as everyone else. Now, because we are sinners we really are just as bad as everyone else. But we need to do everything we can to present Christianity in a positive light so that people are drawn in, not pushed away. Many people reject Christianity because they see Christians proclaiming Christ with their words, and then denying Him by the way that they act. We are not saved by works, and should never think that we are, but that doesn't lessen the importance of following what Jesus commands us to do.
