Why do we make you log in to access these neat features?

All of these features depend on being able to know who you are when you come to the site, and the easiest way to do that is for you to log in. These feaures could not work if you are anonymous. For example, there is no way we can email you when someone replies to your question unless we know your email address, nor could we track your favorites articles unless we know who you are. In fact, we cannot even retrieve your password for you if you forget it - we have to generate a new one for you.
