Atheists

I would like to thank everyone who responded to me.

Hope it is okay to open a new topic, titled, 'Atheists' as I feel I kinda sabotaged the favourite TV ministries thread...not on purpose though.

I have not yet learnt how to operate this forum well...I have only been exposed to using a computer for about 5 months, so please bear with me! Is it posssible for someone to please show me how to respond to individual posts?

For those of you who are interested, atheists claim that the only thing they have in common with other atheists, is that they do not believe in gods! Any gods! But I have noticed many similarities amongsts atheists. I am weary to generalise, but just wanted to share what I have learnt so far. Not all, but many are highly intelligent, they are able to argue and refute scripture, they have put their faith in Science even though they will vehemently deny this 'faith' and say they are only interested in facts. They like to think of themselves as rational, logical and free thinkers.

All religions are taboo to them, and they harp a lot on the atrocities of Christianity mostly, and other religions. They have lumped all religions under the heading of 'theists' and are constantly debating why one religion should be the true religion that all claim to be.

After much debating with them, the Lord has given me such a nice thing to harp on! I keep telling them that the greatest question in the whole world, to all mankind, is the question of who Christ was/is, and that the other religions have answered this question incorrectly, and this is what makes all the difference! I also keep telling them that I simply choose to believe the testimonies of the men of God who wrote the Bible, as well as the testimonies of highly intelligent and effective Christians both living and dead. I tell them this, because they keep saying that I and other theists are irrational and gullible to put our faith in something we cannot see.

I have tried to focus them on the historical Jesus, because at least he was visible and walked the earth, and then it is only a matter of investigating and deciding whether he was who he said he was, or whether he was a liar or a lunatic. (CS Lewis.)

Oh well, I hope you people have a bit of a clearer picture of atheists, and how I have been trying to debate with them. The hardest thing for me is the way they have touched my heart. I feel as if I am carrying a big sadness around with me. Is there anyone here who can perhaps tell me whether this is from the Lord, or whether I should leave this forum? I feel as if maybe I have become too attached to the members, and then I think maybe this is what the Lord wants. I do not know.

Thank you for giving me the oppertunity to post on your forum. I cannot dedicate too much time, as I have a very busy and active life, with many responsibilities, and find that sitting at the computer too long, is not good for me, and side tracks me...

May the Lord bless and keep each and everyone of you! I hope to participate where I can, and to be a blessing to you.

Kind regards, Esther

Thank you for the explanation. I think you are grieving for these lost souls. I have found in my experience that when I encounter anyone with whom my soul grieves, I must pray for them. Be blessed woman of God.

Esther - I am so happy to meet you! With immense, hopeful anticipation, I enjoyed reading each word you wrote. You have indeed been a blessing to me.

I definitely can't tell you what you should do, or what God wants you to do. However, I can't help hoping that dialoguing with atheists is a calling which will be fruitful for you and them.

My first question for you, even before I read your post, was - do atheists ever doubt atheism? By being welcoming to you, I'm guessing they have uncertain queries of their own. The fact that they will consider your comments is highly encouraging.

Have you checked out all the resources on this subject under the Discovery section of this website? I bet you could find useful tools there.

I'm looking forward to hearing more from you Esther. I will pray for you to find direction form the Lord to assist you with your desires to care for these people.

Thank you so much Ryan for your kind response!

To answer your question, if atheists sometimes 'doubt' atheism, they sure keep it to themselves! They claim that if there was one shred of proof of God's existence, then they would believe. I have sent them to a few sites like AIG, Dr Carl Baugh, and Dr Hugh Ross etc, but they come back with long, scientific refutations I cannot even begin to understand!

I have made no bones about the fact that I am not highly intelligent, and that there are highly intelligent Christians who are better up to the task than I am. I also think that the main reason they tolerate me so well, is because I am only 1 of 4 other Christian posters, and the others do not post regularly at all...so it is good for them to have someone to argue with...

On a lighter note, I think they think I am just too stupid to bother with! However they always respond to any posts I make, and this touches my heart so.

I shall check out the 'Discovery' section, thank you very much.

For interest's sakes, if anyone is thinking of joining one of these sites, just a word of caution. First read through many posts before writing any, so as not to fall prey to already discussed topics, and whatever you do, try to exercise wisdom when dealing with unbelievers. I know we are to preach the Gospel, in season and out, but this can be done in many ways. Straightforward preaching is ill received and has been done by many of our Christian bretheren and sisters. Discussion and debate is acceptable to them. Also any kind of what they term, 'Christian Speak' just provides them with fodder to mock God and Christianity.

Far be it for me to impede the Gospel message in any way by giving these guidelines, so please let the Holy Spirit be the One to lead. I just thought I would share some of my experiences and conclusions...

Hi Esther - thanks for answering my question. As Spex said somewhere, Atheists have some kind of faith to admire. I have a high regard for your dedication to reach out to them. My next question is related to your faith. Do you feel more passionate as a Christian when you are around these folks, or do you ever feel like their arguments are wearing on you? My guess is you're more convicted when you are encountering their great needs. Perhaps I am projecting my own feelings on you, but I can feel your enthusiasm for their potential and this is exciting to me too.

I think you may be underestimating your intelligence; but you can never go wrong by leading with humility. When you are conversing with these folks, I'm sure you remember you have the truth and the source of all intelligence backing you.

Have you had a chance to read the Reflection: Advocacy Apologetics: Finding Common Ground yet? It can be found in the Encouragement section. Also, an article in the Discovery section tilted Seven Questions Skeptics Ask is useful.

I have been praying for your efforts. I'm sure God is pleased with your love and concern for these people and will bless you!

i would like to answer a questions from Esther who states that they wonder if Athiests ever doubt their beliefs. From what I have found it is banished in Athiesim. To doubt your faith in nothing is belives in something almost like a sin too athiests. I am a huge fan of CS Lewis and an athiest sight I often read tore him apart for once being a self described athiest and then converting to Christianity shwoing him false

Also athiests don't ever like to be told they are wroing or unoriginal just so you know and even if you give them facts pure facts tha someone of any religion would believe they bash you. Thjis obvously isn't all exclusive just with two athiests I know...

Feel free to ask any questions (sry about the spelling)

So atheism is just like a backwards religion that says "since we don't want to be ruled by anything let's just believe there's nothing to rule us"? Or am i way off? I have an atheist friend (and i use that term lightly) who, one day while i prayed over my food in front of her, she piped in after i'd finished, "God didn't make that, the people at Taco Bell did." That started a big debate between us in which i got to share some scriptures with her about God creating everything and such. After about 30 minutes of discussion, she simply just said forget it, she didn't turn to God, she simply gave up the fight because she realized i'd have an answer for almost anything she could ask. lol, good times.

Great story! Yes, that's my feeling on it. Atheism is a way of shaking your fist at God and saying, "you won't rule over me!" The easiest way to live that way is to pretend you don't believe in Him. But, it's a completely untenable position, intellectually and philosophically, and that's why every debate I've ever had with an atheists always results in me thinking, "seriously? you really think that? you seriously won't accept that God is real? wow!"

Hi Spex - I think it is great you gave your friend something to think about; I bet she has thought about your words on many occasions. Perhaps, she'll return to your comments when life leads her to search for more meaningful answers than atheism can provide. Science and popular culture encourage people to accept atheism; it is up to Christians to make a counter offer. Who will make the case for Christianity if we don't? Of course God can directly confront non-believers but, it seems to me He usually uses us to offer words of wisdom spoken in love and an influential testimony in how we live our lives, to at least gain their attention.

God has chosen to make some powerful examples of the most rebellious religious and non-religious folks by turning their hearts toward Him. We marvel at the power of God!

My Brother-In-Law is a non practicing Catholic.
One day we were at their house for dinner.
No one said a prayer before the meal, so my
Husband offered to. My Bro-In-Law (already chewing his
food) argued that God has nothing to do with the meal,
or providing the food etc. (He himself worked to get the food.)
My Husband shared how God Created Everything,
and how He causes things to have life and grow,
even the food we eat, and because of God, he has
a talent to work well at his job...
My Sister later told me the next time she saw him eat,
(and from that time on) he would hold his fork, look up and say; "Thanks God." (Then eat!)
Spex, I pray that one day the (truth) seeds you planted
with your friend will take root and she will understand!

Great story Ignited Faith!

Have you considered a plot to employ at the next family gathering to foster further growth in your brother-in-law?

Consider the axiom: There are no atheists in foxholes. I think this holds true for most folks, and also applies to back-sliding Christians. I have heard belligerent atheists claim there really are atheists in foxholes. However, I am betting they are vastly out numbered by those to whom the adage does aptly apply. We could hope for God to put this test before them.
6/6/2008 1:58:36 PM by Ryan, Member of Delve into Jesus since 12/30/2007

Ryan,
God is Faithful!
(I don't have to plot anything!)
My Sister tells me great Testimonies of what
God is doing already in his life, and their (teenage/adult) Children. (Much prayer is needed though. There are some very pressing issues.)
My Sister was previously a Jehova's Witness.
She is now a born again Christian, free from Religion, and the truth of God's Word has set her free! She is very bold at times with her faith, and other times she knows when to be silent, pray and trust God.
Funny you should mention about Foxholes!
Each year we have a family of fox in our yard! Their den's are just out back. (You can see bones out side of the fox holes from their latest dinner.) I remember hearing the term; "Sly as a fox."
We watch our dog and Grandson very carefully...
the fox are out any time of day!
Then I thought of War, and Foxholes! I thought of a person hiding in one for protection. What fear that must be like for someone who doesn't consider God! What a difference it makes for a Believer to hide in one and have faith and trust in God! (finding peace, no matter where you are, even in a foxhole!)

Hello there all you nice people! I am just popping in to say hi, and to tell you all that I think this forum really is Christ-like, and to see you encouraging each other etc, is beautiful.

I think I have said all I have wanted to, concerning atheists for now, and look forward to joining in some of the other discussions.

Once again, thank you for all your contributions to this topic.

Esther:)

Hi Esther,
Nice to see you here!

I have a friend who is doesn't believe in anything, so i guess that would be considered atheistic. He lives his life solely for others, like serving other people and all. He thinks the main reason people believe in God is because they are scared of what happens after death. I told him that may be why some people believe, but thats not why I believe in God. I've had many talks with him about God, but I just don't know how to reach him.

Aha; a day for celebration! I am pleased to say I sat next to one of my favorite atheists in church this morning. Afterward, we took our children for a scenic dolphin chasing cruise, which seemed to fit nicely with the theme of the sermon. I can't say what God has planned but, I'm guessing his kids will be pleading for a repeat next Sunday.

God is good!

Awesome, awesome news! Thanks Ryan for sharing, and praise God!

News on the Atheist Front:

Renowned atheist, Penn Gillette, of the magical Penn & Teller fame was recently given a Bible. Surprisingly, he was moved by the gesture and commented, "How much do you have to hate someone not to proselytize them?" Even an atheist can witness!

Regarding my atheist friend who came to church with my family:
He has yet to return, despite a few promises during Saturday evening gatherings that he would join us for church in the morning. His wife, who has always defined her self as a Christian, has renewed an interest in attending church on a fairly frequent basis. My friend has joked that he didn't make it to church because he just couldn't resist the opportunity to get a break from his wife. I can see his point. And my wife, who is a close friend of his wife, concurs that his wife has been absolutely unreasonable with him. Oh, the power of a single witness!

In the UK, celebrated atheists Richard Dawkins and A.C. Grayling front-lined a campaign to advance atheism by plastering a slogan on 800 city buses. Their message:
"There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."
Thank you atheists; with this peace offering it is clear we can have a friendly debate. Advertising the probability that God could exist creates opportunity for nice dialogue on Probability Theory and the existence of God. Christians have long argued that millions of the complexities of life and the universe could not logically have come into existence as random events. Oh, the many chances to witness!

Thanks for sharing, Ryan. i just started a new job, and I'll be looking for ways to witness. I don't want to go in there with guns blazing, or people will think I am too bold and lose respect. I think I can be subtle and effective. My only fear is that I will be too subtle and not step up when the time comes. On a related note, THANK YOU GOD for allowing me to find a new job in the awful economy.

Hey Addison-X - Congratulations on the new job! It is great to see you praising God for this blessing, so perhaps I need this reminder more than you:

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is Gods will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

Lead with joy, and your co-workers will be drawn to you.

The joy of the Lord is your strength. (Nehemiah 8:10)
