"Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy" Psalm 126:5

Often in a hard season we can become discouraged when we don’t see anything good happening. We can wonder what God is doing, and we are often tempted to simply complain about our situation. We can be tempted to throw our hands up in the air and give up on anything ever changing for good. But the Bible shows us that there is more going on that we can’t see immediately.

A farmer who wants to reap a large harvest needs to work very hard long before ever getting any results. We works the ground, takes seed and plants it. He maintains his field, and must constantly keep working. He also needs to trust that God will provide the water and light to make things grow. A lot of the results are outside of his control. During that time before the harvest, he might feel like being lazy, or be impatient as he waits for things to grow. He might also worry about what the results will be, and wonder why God doesn’t give a clear sign of assurance that he can trust in.

In Psalm 126, we see a different kind of response to this time before a harvest. We can look back on what God has already done in the past. God has done many good things, and we are prone to forget if we aren’t reminded of this. We can know that even if the time of sowing is long and hard, even filled with tears, there will be joy in the end. The work that we so, done with trust in God’s provision, will produce a great harvest in his timing.

"He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him." Psalm 126:6
