There is a war raging around you right now. You have been a part of it, whether you know it or not. For the Christian, this battle is a daily reality that we live with until the very end. And understanding the nature of the battle is incredibly important if you are going to be fighting in it.

There is an enemy. The devil, who seeks to kill, steal, and destroy, along with all of his demons. They are at war against God, and against all those who bear the name of Christ - which would be the Christians. The enemy knows that he cannot take us away from Jesus. Our King is stronger than that. Instead, the enemy tries to make us ineffective. Stop us from fighting. Beat us down and distract us so that we no longer pose any threat. And why does he do this? Because when he sees a Christian, he sees someone who is made in the image of Christ, and he sees you as a very great threat indeed. So he will seek to make you sin and weigh you down with despair. He will tell you lies like, "That's just who you are. You'll always sin like that. You'll always struggle with this. Don't even bother fighting this. Just give in, and it will all feel better." Reject that. When Jesus saved you, he made you a new person. Your identity is no longer that of a sinner, but a saint. You may still fall - you are not perfect yet. But it is no longer your nature to sin. There will still be temptation - the battle - but you are made in the image of Christ, and Christ is victorious by nature.

A battle is never over when you fall. If that is how you treat it, then the enemy will win many battles. However, a battle is never over when one side loses a bit of ground. The battle is over when one side flees the field entirely. So if you fall during the course of this war, do not let that signal the end of the fighting. Turn it around. Make a counterattack. Go on the offensive again. “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” James 4:7. Pray against what the enemy is doing. If it is a spirit of jealousy, command it to flee in the name of Jesus. If it is lust, call the Kingdom of God to come against it in force. If it is fear, doubt, worry, or anxiety, ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit, and you will find that "the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" Phillipians 4:7.

Remember that there is no retreat in the Kingdom of God. It is not the will of the Father that we would fall in sin and lose ground. God did not go through the trouble of saving us and giving us new hearts, just to leave us as prisoners of the old chains that bound us. Rather, he has made us new - in the image of Jesus, as strong and courageous warriors. It is not pride to say that God has made you a strong warrior against the darkness - when you are saved by Jesus, that's just being realistic! As a Christian, do not retreat and give way to sin. Instead, "Put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand." Ephesians 6:13. Stand your ground against the enemy and fight - he's terrified of that.

The battle is over when the enemy flees. This way, Jesus gets the final victory each time, regardless of any setbacks during the skirmishes. And always be sure to give him the credit for the victory - for it was Jesus who found you, freed you, trained you to fight, armed you for war, and went before you into battle as a warrior king. You get to fight and take part in battle against evil, sin, death, and the kingdom of darkness - rejoice in this with humility and thankfulness. But never forget that you are a soldier in a larger conflict.

This is a cosmic war between two opposing kingdoms. Do not be content to fight in your little corner of the battlefield. There are many more campaigns and crusades still to be won against the enemy. There are countless others who struggle with the very same thing that has been defeated in your life. When you've had victory and become a "veteran" of this war, use that experience and wisdom to come alongside others and fight with them against the darkness. Jesus will have need of your sword once your own space is cleared of fighting. When that horn cries, answer, and go to war to the glory of God.

Do not fear this war. While the enemy would very much like to destroy you, the love of Christ is far more powerful than anything he can throw at you. We are made in the image of Jesus - and by nature, we are strong, courageous, victorious warriors. Do not let the enemy lie and tell you otherwise. No soldier can fight if they believe themselves to be destined to lose. Instead, trust in what Jesus says about you. Listen to him, and follow him. He is your Captain. He is your King. He will lead you into battle against the forces of darkness, and he has many great victories planned for you. Learn to trust in his leading, and you will not fall victim to the lies of the enemy. Go after Jesus in everything you do. You will see battle, but remember that the enemy would not be fighting against you if he didn't think you were worth the effort. Fight, and when you have victory, train up your other brothers and sisters to do the same. And always, always, always, trust Jesus. He's got your back in all of this.

“Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:56
