For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. - 2 Corinthians 4:6-7

At Christmas there is so much to capture our attention and steal our desires. We're easily distracted by the glitz of Christmas trinkets, whether those charms be time spent with loved ones, warm feelings, or shiny new toys. The distractibility is natural; after all, we are earthen vessels.

Though bodily we remain earthen, Jesus, the Light of the World, came to shine in our heart. He also came to give us the desires of our heart. All the shimmering desires of our heart are treasures to both possess and share.

At Christmas, we celebrate the fulfillment of the prophecy in Isaiah 7:14 – a virgin would give birth to a son who would be "God with us". In every Christian jar of clay is hidden the true treasure of Christmas – not just God with us but, God is so with us that Jesus is in us.

It’s easy to chase any of the many beautifully packaged diversions of the Christmas season. As we do, we may also feel, or act, as though Jesus is surely not in us but, He must be running far and fast away from us.

However, we can be encouraged by God’s love being in us and making us like Jesus while we remain in this world (1 John 4:16 -18). Although the formation of Jesus within us can seem like a slow and painful process (Galatians 4:19), it is a calling and a work of His grace, designed specifically for you (2 Timothy 1:9).

With Jesus in us, we are being transformed from the inside by the renewal of our mind (Romans 12:1, 2). We can be so shaped by Jesus in us that we can conclude as St. Paul did: "It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me" (Galatians 2:20).

As jars of clay, we need to rely on Jesus to shape us as He wills. Although it is difficult to abandon our own opposing desires and resistant striving, we need to be ever cognizant of Jesus’ desire to mold us into His form, and wait in faith that He alone will do it.

Pausing at Christmas to contemplate the Light of the World shining into our hearts is a wondrous reality to partake of – it is light to our souls and worship to God. Eventually, we will gaze, awestruck, upon the artistry of Jesus’ creation in us.

This Christmas, may God grant you all the desires of your heart because all the desires of your heart have become the true treasure of the Christmas season – Jesus in you. Merry Christmas; you have the treasure you seek!
